Siemens Solid Edge helps power PUP to place big in Shell Eco Marathon 2016

April 15, 2016

The ultimate battle for supreme vehicle energy efficiency concluded last March 6, 2016 in Manilaat the Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2016. The event is a unique competition that challenges students around the world to design, build and drive the most energy-efficient car. With three annual events in Asia, Americas and Europe, student teams take to the track to see who goes further on the least amount of fuel.

This year, the two teams of Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) placed higher than their previous track results. PUPHygears Eve II placed 4th, in the Diesel Fuel Category and Team Sinagtala placed 12th in Gasoline Fuel Category.

PUP Hygears Eve I placed 8th on the same category last year, while it's the first for time for Sinagtala to be in the Top 20 for the Gasoline Fuel Category.

Eve II and Sinagtala were designed through Solid Edge, the premier mainstream CAD design tool from Siemens.  "Solid Edge helped us design with comfort, time efficiency and produce more presentable drafts that can be processed out quicker than a normal CAD software does. It helped my team to create impressive new parts and ideas for our PrototypeEVE II”, Cho Sung Hum said, Team Leader of PUP Hygears.

CIM Technologies, Inc., the Siemens PLM Software partner for Solid Edge in the Philippines, provided the software, training and technical advisory support for the two teams. Training was conducted at Stanford IT Learning, the training division of CIM. In addition, CIM also provided several key component parts needed by the  teams.

There were 118 teams from 17 countries across Asia, the Middle East and Australia who competed under Prototype and UrbanConcept categories. Cars are powered by either diesel, gasoline, battery, compressed natural gas, diesel, hydrogen or alternative fuel.

Shell Eco Marathon 2017 is expected to be held on South Korea. With early design conceptualization, planning and preparation using Solid Edge,PUP believes that they will gain a higher place for next year's marathon.
